As car enthusiast I have a question why do automatic cars stay put without an email brake but manuals need one.

There are parking pawls that keep the transmission from spinning when in “park.”

What’s an “email” brake?

Email brake? :)

And manual stay put if you leave the car in gear. Not sure what an automatic transmission does, but most likely something similar

automatic transmissions have these pawls that lock the transmission when in park

As others said- automatic transmissions have a “parking gear”but it isn’t really a gear. But it does provide the mechanical resistance to stop a car from rolling. HOWEVER - you can use a parking or emergency brake on an automatic anyways. In fact, you should. This way it remains rust free so that the odd day it does get used 8 years down the line, the mechanicals don’t freeze up and leave you stuck in a driveway........not that I have any experience with that >_> .......<_<......

theres a gear inside the transmission......looks like a small flywheel, and when you put the trans in park, a finger with three or four teeth catch the wheel to keep it from spinning.

its in the bottom 1/3 in the middle

Well you see the firewall helps sort the viruses out that cause manuals to roll w/o one.

close,........ more fragile though, like a baby sister that youre stuck watching..... cant go anywhere fun with them on.

you get mean with them too often and they get broken or hurt........ and they will let you wander off , usually with bad results.

When the handbrake cable snapped on our manual Focus, parking in gear was not enough to stop it rolling down our slightly-sloped driveway. In my experience the surface has to be almost flat for parking in gear to hold the car, though no doubt it differs from one car to another.

it can depend on how good the compression is in the engine, and also what gear you are leaving it in..... high gear, has a tendency to want to roll(like how its easy to roll start on a hill), where reverse, or first are a bit tougher for it to budge.

In super simple terms, the automatic jams up the transmission, while the manual doesn’t.

The parking brake should always be used. It’s what keeps the car from moving when you walk away from it. As a fail-safe only (because it’s not always reliable enough for sole dependency) a manual transmission should be left in gear, which will turn the engine over if it tries to roll. But because automatics have a fluid coupling instead of a solid clutch, the engine won’t resist getting turned over if it starts rolling. To make up for this, automatics have a parking pawl. Others have gone into detail so I won’t, but i’s pretty much jamming a wrench into a specific gear, locking the trans solid. It still should not be the only thing relied upon to hold the car... set the parking brake anyway, especially on hills. The parking brake in my work truck doesn’t work very well, which is unfortunate as the parking pawl is worn enough that it doesn’t hold the truck on steeper hills. It sucks.

1. What’s an email brake? 2. An auto in neutral will roll, one in gear will creep because the torque converter doesn’t fully separate, and if you put it in park a small pawl will lock the gearing.

When you park, let off the brake, and roll a few inches as you get out, it’s because the pawl landed between teeth. You stop when it engages.

What gear did you try leaving it in? 1st should have been plenty to hold it.

Park on a steep grade and a manual can roll away. since there’s nothing but engine compression holding it in place, a big hill can be enough to rotate the engine (especially small 4 cylinders) and cause the car to roll. An automatic’s parking pawl basically locks the transmission in place, preventing it from rotating no matter what.

Aren’t they known to let go (I mean break) when parked on a too steep hill?

And yes of course, especially when, like me you drive a rotary, which can’t hold anything for shit lol. But I thought putting a car on park was working the same way until I learned something blocked it. Never owned or worked on a automatic..

it’s designed to hold the weight of the vehicle, so it would take a significant amount of force to break it. I have heard that some will disengage if you drag the vehicle over a certain speed (like if a tow truck is repo-ing a car) but i don’t know of any vehicle specifically that does that.

Ok, interesting... I have always disliked automatics and never really looked further than how it feels behind the wheels of one :)

It was first gear.

Admittedly I didn’t let it roll very far to see if it would hold as if I had it would have hit the garage door (our driveway consists a short downward slope between the street and the garage almost a exactly one car long) and I needed the little remaining room to allow for the roll required to reverse up a slope without hitting the aforementioned garage door in the absence of a functioning handbrake.
